He was the technology visionary of my generation.

His passing must be noted.

That is all.

Shocked to see it as the top news on BBC.

He’s made history with some of the smartest, best designed and innovative tech products.

    RIP Steve Jobs.

    indeed.

Before Apple and the Mac, using a PC required amateur computer programming skills.

The Macintosh was introduced in 1984, 27 years ago. Here’s what life was like that short time ago:

Sending correspondence required one to type it on a typewriter or write it out on paper, place it in an envelope, seal it, and address it. Errors in typewriting were by white-out. There were two modes of delivery: hand delivery by local courier or US mail.

Term papers in high school were handwritten out, then typewritten. They were researched using card catalogs and microfiche readers.

If you had a computer, it had at the very most 64K of something called RAM – random access memory. The computer was either a Commodore 64 or a TRS-80. This device weighed about 75 pounds and took up half a desk. Only the very strangest people knew anything about how it worked. It had either a green or orange screen. This computer could play a weird game called “Worm” which consisted of a computer graphic worm which grew longer and moved faster the better you got at the game. More advanced versions of this computer could play a fledgling game called “Leisure Suit Larry”.

If you really needed to reach someone now, you called on the rotary phone from home or office.

telephone messages were written out on a pink ‘While you were out” slip.

There were two places you could listen to music: at home or in your car. There were three media: radio, cassette tape and LP record.

If you wanted info about a vacation spot, you called or wrote and received by US mail a brochure or pamphlet. You got further info by calling.

phone calls were received only while at home. Only a few homes had answering machines. If there were no answer you tried again later.

phone calls were returned only when you returned home or to the office. If you really had to reach someone you borrowed another’s landline phone and offered to reimburse for the long distance charges.

If your car broke down, you depended on the goodwill of others. You flagged down someone to drive you to a safe place and get car service. You walked to the nearest house or business you could find and asked to borrow the phone.

Entertainment was whatever was on cable TV or at the movei theiater, or what you could rent on VHS at the video store. If you really had to have porn, you found it at a back room at the video store or on the top shelf at the convenience store in the plain brown wrapper.

I dont think he invented the cell phone, or how the phone communicates in a wireless manner.

All he did was popularize it.

      Beta’s figured out the former.

He was a creative man, but he stole a lot of his best ideas, including the graphics/icon interface of the Mac from Xerox.

But he sure did a lot more than most for his life. Especially if you feel that your life completely depends on all of this junk.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the toughest to survive, but he fought it and kept working right up to the end too. This guy was Courage Wolf personified. Posted from my iPhone.
